BRDC Formula 4 title race intensifies at Oulton Park
15/07/2013
Qualifying, plus three BRDC Formula 4 races were all concentrated into a single day's activity at Cheshire's Oulton Park circuit on Saturday 6th July. Jack Barlow claimed pole for the first race of the day and tenth in the championship, and duly translated the advantage into victory in Race 1, with Jake Hughes and Seb Morris joining him on the podium to make it an all British affair.
Privateer Matt Bell - who won the first ever Formula 4 race at Silverstone in April – started from pole by virtue of the top-eight reverse grid from Race 1 and became the series' first three time winner by taking victory in the second race of the day. In a close run race, he led Jake Dalton and South Africa's Raoul Hyman to the chequered flag.
With the fastest lap from Race 2 to his credit, sixteen year old Charlie Robertson started from pole in Race 3 but was unable to continue the day's pattern of lights-to-flag victories for the pole man. Instead, it was Ross Gunn who ran out the winner, with Jake Hughes claiming his second runner-up points of the day and Robertson finishing third.
With the championship nicely poised at the half way stage of the series, the top six drivers in the standings – Dalton, Hughes, Morris, Robertson, Bell and Barlow - are separated by less than the 30 point value of a race win. Intriguingly, Morris, who is just 14 points short of Dalton in the lead, is the only driver in the top seven yet to win a race, but his consistent points scoring could yet make him an interesting outside punt to win the series by stealth.
A dedicated 1 hour recorded programme will be televised on ITV 4 on the Sunday following every BRDC Formula 4 race weekend. Complete race reports and comprehensive information on the championship can be viewed at www.formula4.com
