Comma driver Jolyon Palmer takes historic maiden victory
23/04/2010
Comma’s driver Jolyon Palmer took a historic maiden win in Formula Two in the opening race of the season at Silverstone, the Briton keeping a cool head to control the race from lights-to-flag.
Palmer's victory is the first for a British driver in the new era of Formula Two. "It's fantastic, all I could have hoped for really," said Jolyon. "I was under pressure at the start but managed to hold it off and get a small gap. Then I was just concentrating on saving my tyres for the last laps, not making any mistakes and trying to keep focused. I am really delighted with my first F2 win."
The race played into Palmer's hands from the start, with the 19-year-old enjoying a fantastic getaway off the line whilst his fellow front row racer, Danish Johan Jokinen bogged down. Fellow Brit Stoneman nipped into second as Jokinen, Russia’s Sergey Afanasiev and Austria’s Philipp Eng went three wide down to turn one. Afanasiev won the battle into Copse and Jokinen then endured a trip across the grass at Becketts - dropping to 13th place in the process.
Comma Sales & Marketing Director, Mike Bewsey said: "What a cracking start to the 2010 F2 series! We’ve been supporting Jolyon since 2008 when he drove for us in the Formula Palmer Audi race series. We were already really excited about the 2010 season and the fact that Jolyon has finished first, in the very first race of the year is outstanding. We’re very proud to be supporting one of Britain’s emerging motorsport talents."
Palmer finished second in Round 2 of the weekend’s events, placing him at the top of the table after the first two races.
Comma is Technical Partner to the FIA Formula Two Championship providing all of the lubricants, chemicals and maintenance products required in running the series. Of the Partnership, Bewsey added: "The re-launched FIA Formula Two Championship is already proving itself on the global motorsport stage. This is the highest profile product quality test that we could put ourselves through – our products are quite clearly up to the challenge."
